Our 2006 Syrah is opaque, deep garnet purple in color and offers seductive aromas of cinnamon, clove, Smokey tobacco, dark plum liquorice and baked earth. Full of ripe upfront tannins. It delivers full, mouth-watering and jammy flavors of luscious dark plum fruit on the palate with hints of spice, and chocolate. This muscular wine pairs well with hearty, full-flavored meals _such as barbecued steak, ribs and full-bodied cheeses.
Our 2006 Syrah is grown in 21 single vineyard in Mendocino County, just north of the town of Ukiah where eagles are seen flying through the sky. With warm days and Cool, often foggy evenings the moderate temperature of this wine growing region allows, to develop a mature tannin profile while retaining the aromatic complexity and spicy notes which disappear when grown on hotter sites.
Handpicked and meticulously hand-sorted upon arrival at the winery, our Syrah was fermented with 20% whole Clusters which add aromatic complexity and enhanced structural development. The fermenting juice was given a combination of punch-downs and pumpovers. The wine was left on the skins for two and 21 half weeks after fermentation in order to increase complexity and soften the tannins. Aged for 20 months in French Oak. this wine is showing magnificently upon release and has all the to continue to evolve nicely in bottle for years to come.
For the second year in a row, we faced a wet spring and a cooler than average growing season – until a two week heat wave struck in mid-Summer. Thankfully, our Syrah grapes in Mendocino had not yet gone through the phase of growing called veraison, during which the skins soften and the fruit becomes much more vulnerable to extreme heat. This allowed our 2006 vintage to retain all of the complex aromatics that we find so compelling in the variety and we were able to harvest these grapes at the perfect balance of ripeness and structure during the second week of October.
Jinetes Syrah is made entirely from grapes grown in one of Mendocino’s finest vineyards, the aptly named Eagle Point. At 1800 foot elevation, this vineyard is much cooler than the surrounding area, perfect for growing high quality wine grapes. This darkly colored wine has a rich aroma of ripe, dark fruit, with spice and cocoa notes. It has a very generous mouth-feel, with plenty of ripe plum-like dark fruit. The plumy fruit opens up with airing, revealing further berry and red fruit flavors, along with attractive spice and chocolate notes. While well-structured, the tannins remain dominated by the rich fruitiness, never getting out of hand. Like many wines from this fine vintage, the Jinetes is very nice to drink now and does not require extended cellaring. This, the third vintage from this winery, is a very nice effort indeed!
